Picture this: It’s eight days before Halloween. My friend Mara texts me three words and a chain of emojis: “HELP. BABY. COSTUMES.” Her daughter was eight weeks old. Her husband had exactly zero opinions about Halloween. And Mara had exactly zero budget left after a month’s worth of diapers.

We had The Incredibles on the table in forty minutes.

Baby in a $6 red onesie. A felt “I” logo I cut out in about twelve seconds — hot-glued on, done. Dad wore his red zip-up with a matching iron-on logo. Mara wore a stretchy red dress with the same treatment. Total family costume cost: $22.

They walked into the neighborhood block party, and I watched three people grab their phones within thirty seconds. One grandmother put her hand over her heart. A woman I’d never met actually squealed.

That is what matching family Halloween costumes with a baby can do. Something about a tiny human in a themed onesie makes every adult in a thirty-foot radius completely lose their minds — in the absolute best way.

After helping plan dozens of Halloween looks that included babies, from newborns in baskets to toddlers in full regalia, here are the 25 best family Halloween costumes with baby that actually work — including Disney favorites, easy DIYs, last-minute saves, and the smartest newborn costume hack I’ve ever seen.

According to NRF 2025, Halloween spending hit a record $13.1 billion, with 71% of Americans planning to purchase costumes — a $4.3 billion category alone. And here’s what the data doesn’t capture: the moment a baby in a matching family costume makes a whole porch of strangers burst into applause. That part? Free. But the costume itself? Absolutely achievable under $50 for the whole family.

What Are the Best Family Halloween Costumes With Baby?

The best family Halloween costumes with a baby are ones where the baby’s role is central, visually obvious, and comfortable. Think iconic characters — not elaborate prosthetics. The sweet spot is a costume that reads instantly from ten feet away, layers safely over warm pajamas (October nights drop fast), and doesn’t require anything restrictive near baby’s face. The ideas below hit all three marks.

Disney Family Halloween Costumes With Baby

1. The Incredibles — Baby Jack-Jack

The all-time crowd favorite for a reason. Baby wears a red onesie with a felt “I” logo — cut from a $1 red felt sheet, attached with hot glue or iron-on transfer paper in under ten minutes. Mom goes as Elastigirl, Dad as Mr. Incredible, older siblings as Dash or Violet. The whole family set runs $20-35 depending on what red clothing you already own.

  • Baby onesie: [red baby onesie [AFFILIATE LINK: Amazon]] — $6-10
  • Felt sheets (dollar store): $1 per sheet — enough for the whole family
  • Best for: Family of 3, family of 4, any size family | Difficulty: Super easy | Time: 30 min | Wow factor: Very high

Pro Tip: Iron-on transfer paper plus any home printer creates professional-looking logos for about $3 total. My sister figured this out for a friend’s family reunion shirts — it works identically for Halloween costumes and saves ten minutes of cutting.

Baby in a yellow onesie with felt lion ears hot-glued to a headband ($2-3 in materials). Dad as Mufasa with a lion mane headband — [lion mane headband [AFFILIATE LINK: Amazon]] runs about $12. 3. The Flintstones — Baby Pebbles

Baby Pebbles is one of the most instantly recognizable baby Halloween costumes ever created — and she’s been a hit for fifty years running. Orange spotted onesie, bone hair clip (DIY: felt + barrette, $2), little Bedrock energy. Dad as Fred in an orange tunic, Mom as Wilma in white with red hair. Family of 4 extends beautifully to Bamm-Bamm for a toddler.

  • [Pebbles baby costume [AFFILIATE LINK: Amazon]] — $15-20
  • Best for: Baby’s first Halloween, family of 4 | Difficulty: Easy | Time: 1 hour | Wow factor: Very high

4. Winnie the Pooh — Baby Pooh

Yellow onesie, red crop-top shirt, a little round belly — baby becomes the world’s most loveable bear. Mom as Piglet (pink hoodie + felt ears, $8 DIY), Dad as Tigger or Eeyore. This one photographs beautifully because of the warm, rich color palette, and it works across all ages in the family.

  • [Winnie the Pooh baby costume [AFFILIATE LINK: Amazon]] — $14-22
  • Best for: Family of 3 or 4 | Difficulty: Easy | Time: 45 min | Wow factor: High

5. Toy Story — Baby Buzz Lightyear

Green onesie, wings, and the iconic Buzz collar — babies look absolutely unhinged in this costume (in the best way). Mom as Jessie, Dad as Woody. Store-bought options run $18-25; DIY version with a green onesie plus cardboard wings painted with craft paint runs about $12. Older siblings as Rex, Bo Peep, or Hamm complete a full family of 4 or 5 set.

  • [Buzz Lightyear baby costume [AFFILIATE LINK: Amazon]] — $18-25

6. Wizard of Oz — Baby Dorothy

Gingham onesie, tiny ruby slipper booties, a small basket — Baby Dorothy is one of the most recognizable and photogenic options on this entire list. The full Wizard of Oz set extends naturally to a family of 4 or 5: Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, and Glinda all have distinct, easy-to-build looks.

  • [Dorothy baby costume [AFFILIATE LINK: Amazon]] — $16-24
  • Best for: Larger families, group trick-or-treating | Difficulty: Easy | Time: 30 min | Wow factor: Very high

7. Peter Pan — Baby Tinkerbell

Green felt tutu onesie, wire-and-tulle wings (about $5 at any craft store), a little green bow — Baby Tinkerbell is pure magic. Dad as Captain Hook (black jacket + hook prop), Mom as Wendy, older sibling as Peter Pan in green felt hat.

  • [Tinkerbell baby costume [AFFILIATE LINK: Amazon]] — $15-22

This one is especially magical for chubby-cheeked babies — the ears + round face combo is genuinely alarming levels of cute. Total DIY cost: $10-15.

  • Best for: Newborns, very young infants | Difficulty: Easy | Time: 45 min | Wow factor: High

What Is the Most Popular Family Halloween Costume With Baby Right Now?

9. Star Wars — Baby Grogu (Baby Yoda)

I’ll say it plainly: this is the single most recognized baby Halloween costume idea of the last six years running, and it will be exactly as popular in 2026 as it was the day The Mandalorian dropped. Green onesie, oversized felt ears hot-glued onto a headband, tiny brown robe. Baby is Grogu. Done.

Mom as Rey, Dad as Darth Vader, older sibling as a Storm Trooper. The contrast between a tiny, sweet Grogu and a towering Darth Vader parent is genuinely one of the funniest, most charming family costume dynamics possible.

  • [Baby Yoda/Grogu costume [AFFILIATE LINK: Amazon]] — $15-22
  • DIY ears: green felt + headband, $2-3 total
  • Best for: Family of 3, family of 4 | Difficulty: Easy | Time: 30 min | Wow factor: Extremely high

Trust me on this: Buy baby’s Halloween costume one size up. Costume sizing runs small, babies grow weekly in the 0-9 month range, and you won’t be wrestling a too-tight onesie five minutes before trick-or-treating starts. A 9-12M costume fits most 6-9M babies just fine.

10. Ghostbusters + Baby Slimer

Parents and older kids in Ghostbusters jumpsuits — or just khaki overalls plus DIY patches plus cardboard proton packs painted silver. Baby wears a bright green onesie with green face paint on their hands. Baby Slimer is unexpected, funny, and genuinely delightful. Total family DIY cost: $25-40.

  • Green onesie: $8 | Cardboard proton packs: $5-10 in craft supplies
  • [Ghostbusters costume set [AFFILIATE LINK: Amazon]] — $30-45 for adults
  • Best for: Family of 4 or more | Difficulty: Easy-Medium | Time: 1.5 hours | Wow factor: Very high

11. Minions + Gru — Baby Minion

Yellow onesie, goggles, and denim overalls — Baby Minion requires exactly three items. Dad goes as Gru (gray sweatshirt stuffed for the hump silhouette, long nose made from cardboard). Older siblings as additional Minions. The more Minions in the family, the better this costume lands.

  • [Minion baby costume [AFFILIATE LINK: Amazon]] — $14-20
  • Best for: Large families, multiple kids | Difficulty: Easy | Time: 45 min | Wow factor: High

12. E.T. + Elliot — Baby E.T. in the Basket

And here’s the magic: this is the single smartest newborn Halloween costume idea I have ever come across, and I’ve been planning Halloween events for years.

If your baby is under three months old, a structured costume isn’t comfortable, safe, or advisable. Don’t underestimate this alternative: line a bicycle basket or small padded wagon with a cozy blanket. Tuck baby inside, bundled in warm pajamas — no costume needed on baby at all. You dress as Elliot in a red hoodie and raincoat. Siblings wear matching raincoats. Baby stays completely warm, safe, and perfectly on theme.

9 times out of 10, this costume gets more photos than any elaborate store-bought set in the neighborhood. The nostalgia factor is unmatched.

  • Basket or wagon: already owned or $5-15
  • Red hoodies: already owned or $12-15
  • Best for: Newborns under 3 months | Difficulty: Super Easy | Time: 15 min | Wow factor: Extremely high

13. Mario Kart — Baby Peach or Baby Mario

Pink onesie plus a small crown equals Baby Princess Peach. Blue onesie plus a red cap equals Baby Mario. Dad as Mario, Mom as Princess Peach or Rosalina, older sibling as Luigi or Toad. This family of 3 or family of 4 Halloween costume with baby photographs like a styled editorial setup because of the bright, primary color palette.

  • [Baby Mario costume [AFFILIATE LINK: Amazon]] — $14-20
  • [Baby Peach costume [AFFILIATE LINK: Amazon]] — $14-20
  • Best for: Family of 3 or 4 | Difficulty: Easy | Time: 1 hour | Wow factor: Very high

14. Nightmare Before Christmas — Baby Jack or Baby Zero

Black and white striped onesie plus a white face paint spiral on the chest equals Baby Jack Skellington. Or: white onesie plus a small heart-shaped felt nose equals Baby Zero, Jack’s ghost dog. Mom as Sally (patchwork dress), Dad as Jack (pinstripe suit). This one is a favorite for spooky-aesthetic families and photographs beautifully in moody fall settings.

  • [Nightmare Before Christmas baby costume [AFFILIATE LINK: Amazon]] — $16-24
  • Best for: Adults who love the spooky aesthetic | Difficulty: Medium | Time: 1.5 hours | Wow factor: Very high

15. Scooby-Doo Gang — Baby Scooby

Brown onesie plus felt spots cut and hot-glued on plus a blue collar equals Baby Scooby. Dad as Shaggy (green turtleneck, brown pants — you likely own both). Mom as Daphne (purple dress). Siblings as Fred or Velma. One of the easiest DIY group Halloween costumes with baby that still looks completely pulled-together at the door.

  • Best for: Last-minute planners, family of 4+ | DIY cost: $12-18 total | Time: 1 hour | Wow factor: Highfirst halloween costume ideas

16. Where the Wild Things Are — Baby Wild Thing

White onesie plus felt horns plus felt spikes stitched along the back plus face paint equals the most literary baby Halloween costume in existence. Older sibling or Dad dresses as Max — a cardboard crown and a white pajama suit. The whole DIY project runs $12-18 in materials and about two hours of crafting.

Here’s the thing: sew the spikes onto the onesie rather than hot-gluing them. My sister made this exact costume for a friend’s toddler and learned the hard way that hot glue on stretch fabric loosens fast the moment a baby starts wiggling — which is always.

  • Best for: Crafty families, literary families | DIY cost: $12-18 | Time: 2 hours | Wow factor: Highfirst halloween costume ideas

17. The Very Hungry Caterpillar — Baby Caterpillar

Green onesie plus descending felt circles hot-glued down the front plus an antennae headband equals the sweetest DIY Halloween costume option for very young babies. This one is especially perfect for newborns — zero restriction, no attachments near the face, completely safe and warm. Every parent who has read this book four hundred times will immediately understand what they’re looking at.

  • Best for: Newborns, young infants | DIY cost: $8-14 | Time: 45 min | Wow factor: Medium-Highfirst halloween costume ideas

18. Circus Family — Baby Bear

Bear onesie plus ringmaster Dad plus acrobat Mom plus clown sibling equals a complete circus family setup that photographs like a themed editorial. This one is flexible — if you already own striped or sequined clothing, the parent costumes come together for almost nothing.

  • [Brown bear baby costume [AFFILIATE LINK: Amazon]] — $12-18
  • Ringmaster top hat: [AFFILIATE LINK: Amazon] — $8

19. Pizza + Delivery Driver — Baby Pizza Slice

Baby wears a triangle-shaped pizza slice felt costume — available with two-day shipping via [pizza baby costume [AFFILIATE LINK: Amazon]] for $15-20, or cut from red, yellow, and brown felt in about fifteen minutes. Dad wears a delivery driver shirt or a pizza place apron with a name badge. Mom is “the receipt” (print one on paper, tape to a shirt). Funny, fast, and genuinely crowd-pleasing.

20. Construction Crew — Baby Traffic Cone

Orange onesie. That’s it. Baby is a traffic cone. Add a little construction hard hat if you’re feeling ambitious (dollar store, $2). Parents dress as construction workers in neon vests and hard hats. This is a complete family of 3 Halloween costume that takes twenty minutes max and costs under $18 for the whole family.

  • Best for: Absolute last-minute | Total cost: $10-18 | Time: 20 min | Wow factor: Medium (very funny)first halloween costume ideas

21. Baby Shark Family

I know. I know. But hear me out: the recognition factor with children under five is genuinely unmatched, and babies in shark onesies are alarming levels of cute. The whole family in coordinating shark hoodies and onesies — $14-20 each — makes for a costume that every small child at the block party will immediately sprint toward.

  • [Baby Shark onesie [AFFILIATE LINK: Amazon]] — $14-20
  • Best for: Families with very young children | Difficulty: Super Easy | Time: 10 min | Wow factor: High

Pro Tip — The One Safety Rule That Matters Most:

Trust me on this: always layer the baby’s Halloween costume OVER warm pajamas or a thermal onesie. October nights drop ten degrees the moment the sun goes down, and a cold, uncomfortable baby ends trick-or-treating for everyone. Also: skip any costume with small detachable pieces near baby’s face, any hood that constricts the neck, or any attachment that limits arm movement. Comfort wins over cuteness every single time.

22. Disney Villain Family — Baby Maleficent

Black onesie plus small felt horns hot-glued onto a headband equals Baby Maleficent — unexpected, a little dramatic, and absolutely photogenic. Mom as Cruella (black-and-white clothing you likely already own), sibling as the Evil Queen. This one is for the families who want to do something a little different than the classic hero themes.

  • Best for: Adults who prefer the villains | Difficulty: Easy-Medium | Time: 1.5 hours | Wow factor: Very highfirst halloween costume ideas

23. Superhero Family — DIY Cape Set

Baby in any bright onesie plus a felt cape (cut, no sewing required). Parents and siblings in matching colored capes. Choose coordinating colors, add a felt letter logo, and you have a complete original superhero family. Total cost: $8-15 for the whole family. Total assembly: twenty minutes.

  • Best for: Large families, super last-minute | DIY cost: $8-15 | Time: 20 min | Wow factor: Medium-Highfirst halloween costume ideas

24. Mummy Family — Baby Mummy

White gauze wrap loosely layered over a white onesie equals Baby Mummy. Parents dress as archaeologists or Egyptian royals. This one works beautifully as a family of 3 Halloween costume and comes together from items you can grab at any grocery or dollar store the same day.

  • Best for: Same-day last-minute | Total cost: $10-18 | Time: 20 min | Wow factor: Medium-Highfirst halloween costume ideas

25. Can I Use a Baby Carrier With a Halloween Costume? Yes — Try This:

Baby Carrier Halloween costumes are their own category. Baby rides in the carrier facing outward; you dress the carrier itself as a themed element. Some ideas: baby in carrier as Baby Yoda “hovering” while you wear a Mandalorian cape. Baby in carrier as a kangaroo joey while you wear a kangaroo pouch costume. Baby in carrier wrapped in brown felt as a Chewbacca backpack while you wear a Han Solo vest. The carrier keeps baby warm and mobile — and the costume concept writes itself.

  • Best for: Newborns, families who prefer carrier trick-or-treating | Difficulty: Easy | Wow factor: Very high

Pro Tip — The Photography Rule for Baby Halloween Costumes:

The best photo of baby’s first Halloween isn’t usually the posed one. It’s the candid — baby looking confused while examining their costume, baby grabbing the felt ears off their head (this happened with the Grogu costume and produced the best photo of the entire night), baby making eye contact with a porch jack-o’-lantern. Set up your shot, then put the phone away and let the moment happen.

DIY vs. Store-Bought: Family Halloween Costumes With Baby

Before: a $60-80 pre-packaged family costume set from the party store that may or may not be in stock in the right sizes ten days before Halloween. After: $22 in materials, thirty minutes, and a family look that photographs identically.

Costume Set DIY Cost Store-Bought Assembly Time Difficulty
The Incredibles $12-22 $45-70 30 min Easy
Baby Yoda/Grogu $8-15 $20-30 20 min Easy
The Flintstones $18-28 $45-70 1 hour Easy
Where the Wild Things Are $12-18 $28-45 2 hours Medium
The Very Hungry Caterpillar $8-14 $16-24 45 min Easy
Ghostbusters + Slimer $20-35 $55-85 1.5 hours Easy-Med
Mario Kart Family $18-28 $45-65 1 hour Easy

Bottom line: DIY saves $20-50 per costume set and is just as photogenic. For families with multiple kids, DIY is the smarter financial call — and the look is often more cohesive than mixing store-bought pieces from different brands.

The best family Halloween costumes with a baby are ones where the baby’s role is central and instantly recognizable from across the street — The Incredibles, Baby Yoda/Grogu, Baby Pebbles (Flintstones), and Baby Simba (Lion King) consistently top the list. Most complete family sets run $20-60 depending on whether you go DIY or store-bought.

How do I include a newborn in a family Halloween costume safely?

For newborns under 3 months, skip structured costumes entirely. The E.T.-in-a-basket approach is the gold standard — baby stays bundled in a warm blanket inside a decorated basket while family members dress as characters around them. For slightly older infants, choose a costume that layers over warm pajamas, has no face restrictions, and uses zero small detachable pieces near the mouth or nose.

What is the easiest DIY family Halloween costume with a baby?

The Incredibles is the easiest DIY family costume with a baby — red onesie plus a felt “I” logo (cut from a dollar store felt sheet in about thirty seconds, attached with hot glue or iron-on paper) for baby. All have distinct, easy-to-build looks for every family member.

Is it safe for a newborn to wear a Halloween costume?

For newborns under 8 weeks, avoid structured costumes altogether. Safe options include a themed onesie layered over warm pajamas (with no added attachments), or the E.T.-in-basket approach where baby wears regular warm clothing inside a decorated basket. What is the most popular family of 3 Halloween costume with baby?

Can I use a baby carrier while wearing a Halloween costume?

Yes — and this is one of the most practical tricks for trick-or-treating with an infant. Choose a costume where the carrier becomes part of the look: baby as Baby Yoda “hovering” while you wear a Mandalorian cape; baby bundled as a kangaroo joey while you wear a pouch costume; baby wrapped in felt as Chewbacca while you dress as Han Solo. Baby stays warm, you stay mobile, and the whole concept becomes its own costume category.

Don’t stress about making it perfect. The best Halloween memories I’ve seen — including baby’s first Halloweens that made entire neighborhoods stop in their tracks — weren’t about a $200 professional costume set. They were about a $12 red onesie, a piece of dollar store felt, and a tiny baby who had absolutely no idea what was happening but looked flawless anyway.

Pick a theme. Size up. Layer over pajamas. Go make a memory your family will talk about for years.
